Acre

ACRE is a Beaufort County community along NC Highway 32.  This community also sits along the short line Carolina Coastal Railway (CLNA).   Acre has a unique history with how its name has evolved since the 1770s.

Originally named Long Acre, it served as an important stop on the post road from Plymouth to Bath.  Later maps had the community's name as Long Acre Ridge - as the community sat along a ridge in the Dismal Swamp.  When a post office was established in 1883, the name changed again to "Acresville".  In 1917, the name was shortened to Acre and it has stuck ever since.  The Long Acre name does remain as a township within Beaufort County.
