Wendell Walkabout

Wendell is another one of the growing communities in Eastern Wake County.  The town of now over 6,000 residents was named for the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes and incorporated in 1903.  The town for most of its first one hundred years was known for its tobacco farming, warehouses and agriculture.  As times have changed, Wendell has kept its rural charm and has transitioned successfully to one of Raleigh's and the Triangle's growing bedroom communities.

Downtown Wendell is a designated historic area and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.  Recently, Downtown Wendell has seen a revitalization with the opening of a popular bagel shop, coffee shop along with other unique gift shops.

Downtown Wendell is home to numerous festivals and events year round.  Events like the Big Truck Festival, ProTown BMX, and Spring Into The Arts Walk bring visitors young and old into town.  The Annual Harvest Festival is one of the most popular fall festivals in the Triangle and was featured in the October 2004 edition of Our State Magazine.
