Oaky Grove Methodist Church
On a rare short stretch of dirt road in Eastern Wake County sits the former Oaky Grove Methodist Church. While Raleigh's growth moves to the south and east, this stoic old church is reminder of the area's agricultural and rural history.
Located on an unpaved section of Mial Plantation Road, the Oaky Grove church has a long history. The church building dates to 1876 while what was the Oaky Grove Methodist congregation dates back to the 1830s. In 1949, the Oaky Grove congregation merged with Knightdale Methodist and the regular use of the building ended at that time.
Oaky Grove Methodist Church sits within the Walnut Hill Historic District near Knightdale. The historic district covers land that includes the former Walnut Hill Plantation and the Mial-Williamson and Blake farms. The Walnut Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Most of the area is considered part of the Shotwell Community. Shotwell is named after Confederate War Veteran, Randolph Abbott Shotwell.
