Fun at the North Carolina State Fair

This past October, I visited the North Carolina State Fair for the first time in over a decade.  You would think that with living in Raleigh since 2003 (with the exception of two years in Upstate New York) I would have been to the State Fair numerous times, but I hadn't.

The North Carolina State Fair is a ten day festival that celebrates the state's rich agricultural heritage.  But it is also, a giant carnival, complete with rides, a long midway, games, and pretty much every type of food imaginable.  And it's usually deep fried too.

Bananas for Bob Marley

It was a gorgeous day to be at the fairgrounds! And even though it was the last day of the fair, there were plenty of people around.

Of course, the award winning produce always seems to be a very popular spot at any fair.  The winners for the pumpkins were very impressive.

Plenty of Pumpkins!

A 522 lb pumpkin won the competition.  How did they get it from Goldsboro to Raleigh let alone pick that thing!!!

You can make a lot of pumpkin pie with that big ol' pumpkin!

What I didn't know was that they pretty much have competitions for everything.  From stitching, to canning, to desserts, and even more!

I want to know how you become a judge for the chocolate chip cookies!

Of course, there are the rides.  And on a cloud-free October Sunday, it was just perfect.

I didn't have any of the deep fried Oreos, Kool-Aid, and who know what else.  It just doesn't appeal to me.  But there were plenty of folks in line for those "goodies".

I really enjoyed my first trip to the fair in 12 years.  I went in 2000 when I first moved to North Carolina and surprisingly never went again.  A lot of people in the Raleigh area take off work so they can take their kids, and enjoy the day as a family.  I guarantee you that in the upcoming year's, my wife and I will be doing the same with our new family.
