About

About The Project:

Carolina Crossroads is a collection of community histories, places to go, even eat, and other unique things in North Carolina - and every now and then - South Carolina.  It started with a copy of the first edition of The North Carolina Gazetteer: A Dictionary of Tar Heel Places and Their History by William S. Powell in the front seat of a Saturn SC1.

I first moved to North Carolina in January 2000 - living for one year in Fayetteville.  One afternoon, a speaker was at a public library in the Haymount neighborhood.  I've long forgotten who or what it was specifically about, but overall, it was about towns and places in North Carolina, and the book was mentioned.  I obviously purchased the book just to have it in my collection - to look up a unique town name every now and then.

Later, that basic curiosity turned to taking photos of the various small place name type signs along the many highways of the state.  In October 2008, I started the website.  The first ten years were off and on - starting a family and grad school will do that to you.  This is a hobby after all, and as a wise colleague of mine once said, "Sometimes you work on it for six weeks and then walk away for four months, that's why it's a hobby."

After moving to Charlotte in 2018, I have been able to devote the time I have always wanted towards the project.  It continues to ebb and flow.  Many features aren't planned - often surprises along the way.

My main goal is to share these places and their stories as I discover them.  There is so much to discover and learn in both states that fortunately my curiosity will never end. I hope you enjoy discovering them along with me.

About The Author:

My name is Adam Prince - and I am a native of Southwestern Pennsylvania.  I always wanted to write; I had originally gone to school for journalism.  That quickly changed to more business focused.  But my passion has always been to explore and share what I've seen, learned, etc.

I moved to North Carolina in January 2000 - and except for two years in Upstate New York - I have proudly lived here since.  I have lived in Asheville, Fayetteville, Raleigh, Gastonia, and suburban Charlotte. My wife, two sons, and I currently reside in Cabarrus County.

Carolina Crossroads, along with my other projects, has allowed me to do what I enjoy the most - exploring and writing - but at my own pace.

I am a big believer in serendipity.  There are interesting people, places, and more to be discovered - often when you don't expect or plan on them.
