Cat Square

CAT SQUARE - Abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens were frequently left at this crossroads in Western Lincoln County. The community now has an annual rural Christmas parade that has occurred annually since 1974.

The parade began as an idea by a local church youth group and has become a viral event for residents in rural Lincoln, Cleveland, Burke, and Catawba Counties.  Each year prior to the parade, local residents vote on the new "mayor" of Cat Square.  The "mayor" gets to ride in the parade - the elected person's only ''official" role.

Every year on the night before the parade, an unknown group of people will paint different designs of a cat square on the highway.  The Cat Square Parade is also broadcast live over the internet by local media.
